Terms Explained

Motorcyclists are persons riding upon motorcycles.


•Motorcyclists include Motorcycle Operators and Motorcycle Passengers.


•Fatally injured means that death due to injuries occurred within 30 days of the crash.


•Motorcyclist fatality counts do not include fatally injured vehicle-occupants, pedestrians, bicyclists, etc.


•Example: A motorcycle striking and fatally injuring a pedestrian will not be counted as a Motorcyclist Fatality. However, it is a Fatal Motorcycle Crash.


Where The Motorcyclist Fatalities Data Come From

We obtain our data and statistics from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS), the Federal Highway Administration, and the US Census Bureau.
